General Anesthesia or IV Sedation Pre-Operative Instructions

It is extremely important that you follow these instructions so that you can be kept safe and comfortable during your surgery if you are planning for general or intravenous (IV) anesthesia. Unfortunately, failure to adhere to these instructions may result in having to reschedule your procedure for your safety.

• You may not have anything to eat or drink (including water) for eight hours prior to the appointment. The only exceptions to this are oral antibiotics provided by your surgeon or regular medications unless otherwise instructed by your surgeon. These medications the morning of surgery can be taken with a sip of water.
• A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office and drive the patient home, ideally this responsible adult will be able to stay with the patient for the remainder of the day.
• The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
• Please wear loose fitting clothing with sleeves which can be rolled up past the elbow and low-heeled shoes.
• Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
• Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
• If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, or upset stomach, please notify the office.
